Montero may miss Sounders' road debut Saturday
New Sounders FC sensation Fredy Montero didn't make the flight to Toronto with his teammates Thursday and may miss the franchise's road debut due to illness, a team spokesman said.
If Montero's condition improves, he could rejoin the team Friday, but that remains up in the air. Montero left practice early on Wednesday and was still not feeling well enough to fly when the team departed.
The Sounders play at Toronto on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Montero, a 21-year-old forward from Columbia, has scored three goals in the Sounders' first two games and was named Major League Soccer's Player of the Month for March.

Most important thing is 3 points, followed by no injuries or suspensions for TFC and how well TFC play.

After that I'd go for game day experience which includes how good the game is, atmosphere, weather, etc.

Who's in the other team's line up comes pretty low on my list of priorities. You can have a great game and good entertainment without Montero (or Beckham, or whoever).

as for the stalking thing, it became quite common for a while in england for chicks to go drinkign with PL footballers, go back to a hotel with one or more of them and then allege rape. not once was anyone ever charged, let alone convicted. the whole thing stank of a ploy to get attention/money.

i hope this isn't the same thing. imagine how we'd be feeling if De Ro was stuck missing away games because some idiot was making false accusations. if it's all horse shit, the guy should be here and playing, simple as that.

if it is true, he's got issues and i'm glad he's not gonna be creeping around bmo field or TO.

but let's wait and see before we judge him. he's a shining light in the league so far this season, a toung, talented, exciting player and MLS needs as many of those as it can get right now.

Exactly. Let's not condemn the guy yet. Plenty of footballers (and rugby players for that matter) have fallen prey to this kind of behavious in the UK. It's sad, and it tends to leave a stain that is totally unfair.

He won't be playing on Sat by the looks of it, that's good news from the point of view of TFC getting a result. But none of this is good for the league. in fact after the shit storm in KK last week, this is the last thing MLS needs right now - a shit storm over players as well as fans.

Personally I hope it's all overblown and put to bed quickly with no lasting damage. MLS needs players like Montero, and so do we if we want to be watching a good product on the pitch.

Sources: Sounders' Montero subject of police investigation

By SCOTT GUTIERREZ (scottgutierrez@seattlepi.com) AND GREG JOHNS (gregjohns@seattlepi.com)
SEATTLEPI.COM STAFF
A woman called the King County Sheriff's office this week alleging that Seattle Sounders FC soccer star Fredy Montero was stalking her, two law enforcement sources said Thursday evening.
According to a law enforcement report about the incident, the 23-year-old woman told police on March 31 that she saw Montero in a car near her home in Sammamish. The report stated that she feared for her safety because Montero allegedly had sexually assaulted her in Bellevue the week before on March 22, which she had reported to the Bellevue Police Department.
http://www.seattlepi.com/dayart/20090402/100montero.jpg Montero Montero did not accompany the team to Toronto for this Saturday's game. A Sounders spokesman said Montero didn't travel with the squad because of illness.
Efforts to locate Montero's contact information were unsuccessful, and he could not be reached.
Bellevue police briefed the sheriff's department on the March 22 assault allegation, according to the two law enforcement sources, who said that Montero was the subject of that assault allegation.
Bellevue Police Department spokesman Greg Grannis declined to confirm whether Montero is under investigation. But he did say the department is investigating a March 22 sexual assault.
"We have a case number, and it's an open investigation," Grannis said. "It has not gotten far enough to where charges were filed yet."
Grannis said the department does not usually name suspects prior to charges being filed. Detectives have not yet generated a probable cause statement, a document that is usually a precursor to charges being filed.
A King County Prosecutor's Office spokesman would not say whether an assault case involving Montero had been referred to the office for prosecution. No charges have been filed against Montero; jail reports show no record of any bookings involving Montero. King County Sheriff's Sgt. John Urquhart said that after preliminary investigation, it appears that no crime had been committed on March 31.
Montero, 21, was named Major League Soccer's Player of the Month after scoring three goals in the Sounders' first two games in franchise history.
"We are aware of the situation and continue to gather information," said Sounders spokesman Dave Pearson. "We fully support Fredy and expect him to play next week. We will have no further comment at this time."

Wow, I agree with this.

People are overconfident if they think Montero should play. He's actually quite deadly, and I could do without the stress, given that it's accepted fact that our defense is not up to scratch.

I want us to win tomorrow, that will prove something regardless of Montero's involvement. It will also put us higher than Seattle in the overall standings.

By the way, we beat LA at home 3-2, and Beckham played, but that doesn't further my point.

lol well if he doesnt play that means we win 1-0 cuz i had him on pace for a 50 goal season in all comps, so you subtract the 2 or 3 golasos he probably would of scored and were victorious!!!

i understand the feeling of wanting to beat their best side, because that's what top level sport is all about. but look at it this way - if he plays and scores the winner, will it console you on the way home that we lost to their best side? NO!

we can only beat the team they put out on the pitch. whatever their side looks like, if we win, I'll be elated with the three points.

if he scores the winner and we lose we know that our side needs to improve, putting pressure on the front office to maybe go get us a dp perhaps? but if we smoke them at half strength sure we feel good in the short term but will we really know how good our team really stacks up against the best in mls?

But...we'll...have...3...points...

The goal is to make the playoffs (and more). By any means necessary. What don't people get about this?

so we smoke seattle with half their aquad and next week were overwhelmed by the shite bulls or some other shite team and then were like hmm we smoked seattles depleted roster in the opener and now weve gone oh i dunno 8 games without a goal or 6 weeks without a win

Half their squad? Dude, it's one fucking player...

When is 3 points not 3 points? Answer that question. Please. Now.

You're also assuming some letup will happen if/when we beat Seattle without Montero. Do you really think Carver and all the players are mentally retarded? That because they beat Seattle without Montero they assume they can roll over every team in the league?

If so, you're higher than high.

wow well im sorry that the competitor in me wants to play the best players and the best teams and test myself against the best, and tbh montero has scored 3 of their 5 goals this year, so by that token hes not half their team hes more like 60% of their team, with your philosophy we might as well start playing csl teams as well so we can get the 3 points everytime

Jesus dude...you're being ridiculous, and you know it. Just stop.

Is he also the 60% of their team that allowed zero goals in both games? I never once saw him make a tackle or stop a shot.

And you call ME out for missing the bigger picture.

Also, you still haven't answered the question. When is 3 points not 3 points?

Because you`re unable to come up with a sane reply yourself? Is Gino Padula 25% of our team this year?

A win gives you three points...nobody cares if the other team sent their U7 girls roster. 3 points in the standings is all that counts.

well hey if you guys think its cool to beat up on girls teams lol, personally from playing sports and being a competitor for many years i relished the opportunity to play the best and prove myself every game, if your playing the hottest team in the league or the best player in the league and beat them at full strength then your flat out better than them, period, but not everyone has been there and done that so i wont answer that question, the opinion varys person by person

I'm sure this post drew a few chuckles...but thankyou anyway.

Personally, with our defence the way it is, I don't think Montero would be much fun to watch tomorrow, and I'm glad he's likely not playing.

The real yardstick is how well a team performs over the full season, so it's unnecessary to play every teams full strength squad to gain a perspective on how good we are. Seattle can't use Montero's absence as an excuse or they're admitting they're dependant on one player.

We likely wont have Amado, so it's even stevens anyway.

Finally my real take on tomorrow is in another thread. Tomorrow is less about Montero or Ljungberg than it should be about DeRo's and Serioux's homecoming .

Montero is one player. I don't care how good he is. Beckham is the best player this league has seen, and he didn't carry the Galaxy to glory.

If we beat them with half the first team out, you may have an argument that the victory lacks some luster. This is one player.

And, there is another very important point being glossed over here. There will be a certain player in the starting 11 for the first time who is not to far past being one of the top players for one of the top teams in Europe.

I'm more afraid of what Ljunberg can do than Montero. Unless he has completely declined, he is going to rip the shit out of this league.

While I do agree our defense is questionable, it is quite tight at BMO. We had the second best home defensive record in the league last year, conceding 12. 3 of those came in the match where we had a Whitecap bench warmer and our scout in the back four.

I also think that other improvements in the rest of the team should alleviate pressure some of the pressure on our defense and help the situation further.

All that said, Montero does scare the shit out of me.

i dunno about you, but ill tell you a little about me, ive played soccer and basketball as high as the college level myself personally, i dunno about your athletic background, but when i did i was a competitor, that competetive spirit still burns to this day, so for me to answer you in your trms is tough cuz i dont get pumped on beating an opponent at half strength the same way i do at beating him when hes healthy and on top of his game, so again i dunno about you, but thats how i feel

I think all Edmundo is trying to say is that he would prefer to beat Seattle with Montero there. I tend to agree with him.

On the other hand, if he doesn't play, that's fine, I'll still take the three points and drink my ass off to celebrate. I just won't go as far as saying I would "prefer" that Montero is not there.

Who ever the hell's on the field should never stop a team from always trying to improve the team they put out. I don't give a shit if Seattle throws out An all star team from the EPL and beat us 30-2 or an all star team they gathered from Starbucks and we slam them 36-0. If the front office isn't looking for ways to improve, they need to be fired immediatley.

And please don't give me the "best competition" crap. I played college basketball too. If I saw an advantage, I took it. Teams best player's not out there? Good. Gives my team a better chance at winning. A win is a win. Shit happens through a season. Injuries, red cards, suspensions etc. Those are just as much a part of the game as playing it. It's just as much up to the other team to have a capable backup as it it would be for us to have guys just as equally good to match him if he is playing.

Not trying to be harsh. But I still got that competitive fire too or I wouldn't be arguing. :D

Pretty sure we all get that and agree with the sentiment, but it's the presumptions he makes about the effect that beating Seattle without Montero will have on the club which I find ridiculous.

I think I know Edmundo enough to get the gist of what he's saying. Edmundo is looking at things as a competitor and looks forward to the challenge in itself while the rest of us are looking at the issue as spectators and fans who want to see our team win.

Personally, I'm not bothered either way who shows up for Seattle on Saturday, but I can certainly understand how it might be interesting to see the guy on the pitch interacting with his team and ours.

It's like watching a match between two teams you don't follow. You can argue that it's useless because you don't have any emotion vested in the game or the outcome, but can still watch just because you like to watch good soccer.
