Reds game in Montreal put back 24 hours

Serioux settles in at home
By JACK KAZMIERSKI

Toronto FC recently strengthened its defensive corps by acquiring veteran Adrian Serioux from FC Dallas.
For Serioux, however, leaving the Lonestar State for Toronto was a homecoming.
A Scarborough native, Serioux attended Pope John Paul II high school, where he also enjoyed basketball, track and volleyball. He was a member of Malvern Soccer Club, played for the University of New Haven in Connecticut and started his career with the Toronto Lynx in 2001.

Wynne ready to defend unbeaten start
TFC open at home against Seattle Sounders FC

Toronto FC defender Marvell Wynne believes the unbeaten start to the season is a good base to build on as the team prepares for Saturday's home opener against Seattle Sounders FC (kick off 4:00 p.m. live on CBC).
The Reds started the season with a win at Kansas City Wizards and then tied 1-1 with the defending MLS champion Columbus Crew in Ohio on Saturday. "It has been a good start for us," said Wynne. "It's always good to get something away from home. Winning at Kansas City and then going to the defending champions and taking a point is a great start and gives us something to build on. There are always improvements to be made, but we have done well in the opening two games."

TFC Academy ready for Dallas trip
Reds youngsters facing international opposition

TFC Academy's Senior Team leaves on Friday to compete in the Dallas Cup Super Group. TFC qualified for the prestigious tournament after reaching the semifinals of the MLS Youth Cup in Denver last summer. They open the tournament with a match against Tigres of Mexico on Sunday, before facing AC Milan and Manchester City in other group play.

East notes: TFC thriving away from home
Reds leaving road struggles of past years behind in early season

Familiar heavyweights New England and Chicago are two of the three teams tied atop the Eastern Conference on four points after the opening fortnight of the MLS campaign. No surprises there, even with New England's lengthy injury list. Seeing Toronto FC right beside them? Well, that provides a bit of a jolt considering the fact that TFC had to succeed on the road reach those dizzying heights.

PM hooks up with 'Canadian of convenience'

LONDON — When it comes to the global financial crisis, there are far fewer than six degrees of separation. Prime Minister Stephen Harper staged a photo opportunity on Wednesday morning with Owen Hargreaves, the Calgary-born soccer star who plays for Manchester United in the English Premier League.
Harper is in London for the G20 economic summit.
On the surface, there appeared to be no thematic link between Hargreaves, a defensive midfielder who has played only three games with United this season because of knee surgeries, and the prime minister's economic mission.

More on "hooliganism":

Fighting football’s bad reputation

Toronto FC even have a support group called the “Red Patch Boys”, named after a WWII Canadian infantry division, that travel to away matches. The European model of intense home fans has made it to America. The Crew also have support groups, one named “The Hudson Street Hooligans”.

While not exactly a traditional English firm, the copycat nature of fans can be seen in some pockets of MLS.

I see, we RPB have a "violent militaristic" name that implies that we're a firm?

http://www.thenational.ae/article/20090402/SPORTCOLUMNISTS/124807845/1078/SPORT&template=columnists

CBC published the other side of the story:

Violence that broke out between Toronto FC fans and those of the Columbus Crew last weekend in Ohio should not colour anyone's opinion of Canadian soccer fans, says an ardent supporter of the MLS team.
"By and large, there was no more violence at that game or after the game than you would see at any typical sporting event where there was alcohol consumed," Dwayne Rollins, a member of a Toronto FC fan club called U-Sector who attended Saturday's match in Columbus, told CBC Radio 1's Here and Now.

http://www.cbc.ca/sports/soccer/story/2009/04/01/sp-tfc-fans-violence.html

SLAM! published something on the team.

Toronto FC recently signed Canadian soccer star Dwayne De Rosario to a four-year contract. The flamboyant 30-year-old is one of the league's top talents, and is well-known for his on-field choreography and playmaking ability.
A Toronto native, De Rosario is glad to be home.

Some fans in the Toronto section of the stadium had rude signs. Some hurled obscene insults and gestures at random passersby.

Has this man been to a Leaf's Game? Or any other professions sporting even for that matter?

One Columbus man said a full cup of beer was hurled at him and his four-year-old son by TFC fans.

i think we'd all agree this is unacceptable. I too got hit, there's video proof of who threw it, but no one seems to know the guy.

This was not an isolated few; it was a "mob effect."

Harper's a tool, but seriously did no-one tell him that Hargreaves isn't a good person to use to try and get Canadian football fans on side? I'd be pissed if I had advisers who let me do that.

As for the food, stop messing with the chip butty. The first year it was too fancy. Second year, much more basic, and actually fairly good. Now they're going to be using some kind of garlic butter on it? Just leave it alone, if someone's choosing a chip butty, it's not because they want fancy foods. I'm a bit disappointed that the poutine didn't make the cut.

This one was kind of funny.

Red Patch of Courage: The Red Patch Boys — kind of like Box J Boys spawned by fertility drugs — hit Columbus over the weekend and out come the stun guns.
And the irony is too delicious. There are five professional sports franchises in Toronto and the one that causes riots is TFC, the only city team with a winning record.
