TFC supporters gear up for Crew :canada:
PETER MALLETT

TORONTO — As an estimated 2,500 red-clad Toronto FC fans prepared themselves for Saturday's pilgrimage south for a Major League Soccer match against the Columbus Crew, the cities' two political leaders exchanged good-natured jabs.
"I didn't like Toronto FC last year, and I don't like them now," Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman said yesterday, while rededicating a street adjacent to 22,555-seat Crew Stadium as Champions Way in recognition of the team's 2008 MLS Cup victory.

Morning Denime, thanks as usual!

Most pathetic Crew comment to date on their turnout, from a post this morning on BS:

"Umm, unless there were TFC fans disguised as Crew fans for last years home opener, I am pretty darn certain that the Crew had more fans in the stadium than Toronto. In terms of this Saturday, the Crew will have to have about 2000 fans to match Toronto's number, which I think is quite possible. Hell, I'll say I'm about 75% sure we can get that many! If you want to find out attendance numbers, just wait until after the game Saturday. You will find the answers you are looking for. If you want me to PM you this information, I'll gladly do so. Just me PM first and I'll PM you backhttp://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/images/smilies/wink.gif"

Two words that weren't spoken during Major League Soccer Commissioner Don Garber's media conference call on Tuesday afternoon were worth a thousand.
David Beckham.

When Garber addressed the media on a number of MLS topics for almost an hour- and-a-half, to coincide with the kickoff of the league's 2009 season this past weekend, the much-publicized, much-discussed English international wasn't even a thought.

^ the league loves the fact that we're sending a large group of fans to Columbus again. They're pimping it on the site to inspire other supporters groups of other clubs to do the same thing. I'd love to see it happen too.

CBC cuts hit news, drama, sports, radio (http://www.cbc.ca/arts/media/story/2009/03/26/cbc-layoffs.html)

cbc.ca (http://www.cbc.ca/arts/media/story/2009/03/26/cbc-layoffs.html)

CBC English Services will cut up to 80 positions from its news divisions across the country as part of its efforts to make up a $171 million shortfall in 2009-10.
Richard Stursberg, executive vice-president of CBC's English Services, announced details of cutbacks to radio and television on Thursday in a speech to employees.
The cuts to programming will mean fewer episodes of many prime time television shows and cuts to entire programs on both Radio One and Radio 2.

CBC will also reduce spending on new children's programming and cancel the Living programs produced in each region.
In sports, there will be reductions or cutbacks in coverage of:

International figure skating.
CONCACAF Champions League soccer.
World aquatics.
Worth athletics.
Skiing.

CBC will also drop its Blue Jays baseball telecasts.
On Wednesday, CBC president and CEO Hubert Lacroix announced that a total of 393 jobs would be taken out of English language services at the public broadcaster.
On Thursday, details were released to employees on where some of those cuts might fall.
About $14.4 million must come out of radio, leading to a reduction of 121 jobs, including 20 in Toronto.

_____

I'm not sure it's possible for CBC to cut back on it's Champions League coverage.
That would basically mean, "instead of just not showing it, we won't mention it either."
