i'd check the transportation departments for the routes you're considering to see what/if any big construction is going on, and the border crossing website to see what the average wait times are for the time you plan to travel

google says its an hour less through fort erie

We went through Niagara falls way and it was pretty easy as well... I think im going to go Windsor way this time, just to switch it up and keep things interesting.

Last year I took the Fort Erie route and it was clear sailing all the way. Be careful, driving home on Sunday last year, Ohio state troopers were out in force on every interstate.

Niagara Falls/Fort Erie is muuuuuuch better. Detroit is a mess... there always seems to be some sort of construction/detouring going on.

Not to mention, Michigan roads are TERRIBLE... You notice to difference the instant you cross over to Ohio.

Just watch out for them troopers, as well as Customs coming back. Last year they gave our car a full cavity search. Thought we were transferring contraband, as no one in there right minds could possibly go all the way to Columbus JUST to watch a soccer match. Pricks... :)

Buffalo is the shortest route if you are leaving from anywhere around Lake Ontario. There's not much in it - the Windsor route is about 20km longer. There are more border crossing options in the Niagara area and in my experience the Windsor/Detroit crossing is a pain because the highways don't run to the border. However if you are starting anywhere west of Hamilton then Windsor is a shorter route.

Defo Fort Erie. And here's another warning about following speed limits in Ohio, the Hwy Patrol there are relentless. I saw a guy get pulled over for going 72 in a 65 (and thankful he was there, as it made my 70 in a 65 look slower).

If it's close, avoid the Windsor/Detroit route - if there's a problem on the Ambassador Bridge, you'll wait for a couple of hours.

There are 3 different crossings at Niagara Falls/Buffalo, so you can deke around any problem if you need too

I posted this in the Peace Bridge thread in the Away Game Section. I'll just copy and paste it.

Rainbow Bridge in Niagara Falls is the best way I think. It's the way I go to every home game and it's hardly backed up. (At least getting into Canada. Usually the same on the other side) No tractor trailers are allowed, so there is no truck traffic to try and get around like the Lew-Qwe or Peace Bridge. It's the way I'd recomend. You can get to the 90 by going through Grand Island, which is maybe an extra 10 mins at the absolute max.

Went through Windsor last week.....I75 over the bridge is an absolute mess with construction! most of it is completely closed with some of it open to bridge traffic only. Looks like they are re-doing the whole highway through downtown Detroit. Definitely take the Niagara area border crossings.

Cheers

You mean Toronto > Fort Erie > Columbus.

Just making the distinction because the Peace Bridge in Fort Erie is a much better (and shorter) route than the Rainbow or Queenston-Lewiston crossings in Niagara Falls.

I work at the Rainbow Bridge. There will be no traffic this weekend.

If you cross at the Rainbow you cross into downtown Niagara Falls and basically drive in the states more as opposed to driving in Canada. If you take the peace bridge just make sure you leave early enough to beat the day shoppers.

I drove through Fort Erie from Downtown Toronto to Columbus with a stop for Lunch (I recommend a White Castle stop in Cleveland) and traveling at an average 120km/hour you will be there in 7 hours or less. Watch for Police when you first enter Cleveland and while traveling between Buffalo and Lake Erie.

ditto about the cops in Cleveland - was stopped by them en route to Canada women's World Cup match in 03 in Columbus. But the cop left me off the hook because I didn't have US$80 to pay the fine - he said it was too much of a hassle to get me to the city centre to fill out the paper work and pay by credit card.

If you're going into Cleveland, you've gone too far west...

Take the 271, which connects the 90 east of Cleveland to the 71 to Columbus.

I'm leaving Friday around 1pm from Burlington, Tim. Should be good. :)

And the 405/420 routes are less of a straight line into the Buffalo area than the QEW through Fort Erie. Fort Erie saves you about 10km, if I recall.

How much $$$$$$ in tolls will I need from Fort Erie to Cbus?
