No magic, just hard work beat the Wizards (http://www.cbc.ca/sports/blogs/2009/03/no_magic_just_hard_work_beat_t.html)
Posted by Nigel Reed

My partner in crime, Jason de Vos (http://www.cbc.ca/sports/blogs/_soccer/jason_de_vos/), is not a fan of tabloid journalism.
When we first began working together in the broadcast booth a year ago, he didn't like my snappy Keys to the Game headlines, complaining I was 'dumbing down' his serious pointers to the match ahead.
When Toronto FC began Season 3 (http://www.cbc.ca/sports/soccer/story/2009/03/16/f-toronto-fc.html) of the team's franchise at Kansas City, the tabloid headline writer in me surfaced again, champing at the bit to find an eye catching way of attracting readers and, with the 'Wizards' in opposition, it should have been a piece of cake.

Power Rankings: Fire explode out of the gate

2009 Power Rankings: Week 1

http://soccernet-assets.espn.go.com/design05/i/clubhouse/badges/182.gif 1 (1) Chicago (http://soccernet.espn.go.com/team?id=182) 1-0-0 The Fire showed some early championship form in their 3-1 Brimstone Cup victory over Dallas.

http://soccernet-assets.espn.go.com/design05/i/clubhouse/badges/183.gif 2 (2) Columbus (http://soccernet.espn.go.com/team?id=183) 0-0-1 Guillermo Barros Schelotto caps another masterful night with a goal that secures a worthy road draw at Houston.

http://soccernet-assets.espn.go.com/design05/i/clubhouse/badges/6077.gif 3 (3) Houston (http://soccernet.espn.go.com/team?id=6077) 0-0-1 Was that a soccer field or a sandbox the Dynamo were playing on?

http://soccernet-assets.espn.go.com/design05/i/clubhouse/badges/189.gif 4 (6) New England (http://soccernet.espn.go.com/team?id=189) 1-0-0 Revs might not have enough depth to be serious Cup contenders, but this team will be feisty.

http://soccernet-assets.espn.go.com/design05/i/clubhouse/badges/7318.gif 5 (7) Toronto FC (http://soccernet.espn.go.com/team?id=7318) 1-0-0 TFC had just four previous road wins in its history, so Saturday's triumph at Kansas City is big stuff.

http://soccernet-assets.espn.go.com/design05/i/clubhouse/badges/9726.gif 6 (14) Seattle Sounders FC (http://soccernet.espn.go.com/team?id=9726) 1-0-0 If Fredy Montero keeps up his early-season form, he won't be in MLS long.

Toronto FC outlast K.C. in thriller

Kansas City, KS (Sports Network) - Toronto FC prevailed, 3-2, at the Kansas City Wizards on Saturday night in an action packed, back-and-forth Major League Soccer thriller to open the season for both teams.

The Reds' Jim Brennan opened the scoring before TFC's Amado Guevara and K.C.'s Davy Arnaud traded two second-half goals apiece as Toronto hung on for the precious road win.
"You can tell by the smile on my face that I'm absolutely delighted," Toronto coach John Carver said. "Our road record last season wasn't great, and it was important that we came into the first game of the season and got something from it. I'm delighted with the three points and delighted with the performance. There were some fantastic goals in the game. Jimmy Brennan's strike for us and Kansas City's two goals were all great strikes. The goalkeeper couldn't do anything about those."

Good morning,

Well it is if you didn't click the SSG link. GEEZ!!! The Co-ed more than makes up for it though.

Power rankings are the worst thing to happen to sports in the last 10 years. A writers opinion on which teams are good. Take that time to write an informative or insightful article.

ESPN probably uses a moving average, which includes the last part of last year.

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - Soccer fans in the Lower Mainland appear to be very excited about Major League Soccer coming to Vancouver in 2011. Vancouver Whitecaps FC have sold out the first wave of 5,000 season ticket deposits for their inaugural MLS season in 2011.

Whitecaps president Bob Lenarduzzi calls the response from the community phenomenal. "We sold 5,000 deposits in less than 48 hours and our season tickets for the upcoming season continue to sell at an unprecedented pace."

Ontario attorney general to bring in legislation on ticket overpricing
http://www.cbc.ca/canada/ottawa/story/2009/03/24/ticketmaster-bentley.html

Chris Bentley told CBC News that Ticketmaster has offered some assurances to prevent the resale of tickets on TicketsNow, but company executives weren't prepared to go far enough to meet his demands.
"We'll be drafting legislation to deal with these issues concerning access and pricing when tickets are issued and then turn up on the resale market," he said Monday.

cause they aren't standings. they take into account other things including intangibles like quality of play, strength of opponent, etc

I know it's week 1, actually, maybe even more reason to think this.....how can 2 teams that tied be ahead, in the power rankings, of teams that actually won?
Because based on their original rankings they were 2 and 3 overall going into week 1. A draw for two evenly matched teams is no reason to drop one or the other in the standings, as it shows they both played up to potential.

 <-- You know what I am referring to.

BTW Don't know if anyone else looked at the weather forecast for columbus on Saturday, but it's gonna be a wet one they say. Warm and wet...just like the sorority party at the hotel. Why did I say that?!

I know this has been responded to, but I am going to anyway.

Here's the deal: If the power rankings just reported what has happened in the league so far, we would call them "the league table". We already have one of those. The whole point of power rankings is to use what the author knows about the teams, how they played, who the played, and give a picture of how strong the team is looking so far, and where they might end up at the end. So, if TFC beats Columbus next week, you can expect TFC to go up, and Columbus to go down, but Columbus certainly won't fall to the bottom (despite only earning 1 point in 2 games) and TFC probably won't rise to the top (despite earning 6 points in 2 games).

rocker
03-24-2009, 08:58 AM
the only power rankings I look at are the actual standings :)
I never really understood the point with power rankings.. unless you're using some mathematical equation (as ESPN do, like in basketball and baseball) to consider all the variables, it's too subjective.

And last year Ives had TFC high in his power rankings early in the season, and then as the season went on, they dropped. Of course, cuz they dropped in the standings. so why not just look at the standings?

some of the ESPN power rankings are computer generated, taking into account away difficulty and other #s. But the MLS ones are generally a joke.

TFC match didn't warrant a ratings mention in Star's sports media blog

Here are the most-watched programs from the weekend:
1. Hockey Night In Canada, early game, Saturday, CBC: 1,274,000
2. Hockey Night In Canada, Canucks at Coyotes, Saturday, CBC: 779,000
3. Curling, Canada Cup men's final, Sunday, TSN: 446,000
4. Ottawa at N.Y. Rangers, Sunday, TSN: 389,000
5. Hockey Night In Canada pre-game, Saturday, CBC: 343,000
6. Curling, Canada Cup women's final, Sunday, TSN: 276,000.

Missing from the list are the World Baseball Classic, which attracted 172,000 viewers for Sunday's Japan-U.S. game on Rogers Sportsnet.
..Also absent, as always, is basketball. The Raptors drew only 103,000 to TSN on Friday..
..As for the much-hyped March Madness, the best The Score could do was 97,000 viewers for the Siena-Louisville game on Sunday.

I dont know how the ratings are calculated but I like most of you was at a pub saturday night with about 30 other TFC fans. And I usually watch away games at pubs. While I might throw up a leafs game or raptors game and watch at home while I do other things, TFC games are usually an event where I go to the pub or have a bunch of people over at my place.
