Chasing a soccer dream
Toronto FC's Gomez here from Gambia in hopes of being next Rio Ferdinand
By BILL LANKHOF (bill.lankhof@sunmedia.ca)

Dressed in its plastic winter bubble, Toronto's BMO Field practice facility echoes with players' voices; At midfield, coach John Carver stands with his arms crossed, legs splayed and, when a player falls clutching a shin and writhing in pain, yells: "Play On! Get up. You've got to be (bleep, bleep) tough!"
At the other end of the pitch, Emmanuel Gomez watches. And learns. Welcome to the pros, kid. No prisoners taken here.
He smiles. The 18-year-old from Gambia is chasing a dream -- and half the battle has been just getting here.

MLS still growing despite recession
by Ben Rycroft (http://www.metronews.ca/vancouver/columnist/179696)

Wednesday’s press conference to announce Vancouver will join the MLS in 2011 came as no surprise to many. It’s a club with a rich history of developing talent and producing winners, and one that had the financial backing, as well as the political support, to make it happen.

And despite the pleas of a few loudmouthed, protectionist soccer pundits who believe it should remain an American league, the MLS made the right decision by expanding to Canada again.

Nash brings MVP experience to MLS
THE CANADIAN PRESS
VANCOUVER -- The suggestion brought a chuckle from Steve Nash.

Now that he's a part owner of Vancouver's new Major League Soccer franchise, does the two-time NBA most valuable player have any interest in pulling on a jersey and playing for the team when it makes its debut in 2011?

"If I'm putting on a Whitecaps uniform in two years I'll be disappointed in the roster we have put together," Nash said Thursday from Phoenix. "Obviously I've had some dreams about it, but not really any thought.

Seattle starts off with a win
The Associated Press

SEATTLE — For one night, the atmosphere had the feel of Germany and Argentina, La Liga and the English Premier League. The debut of Major League Soccer's newest expansion franchise was pure perfection.
Young Colombian Fredy Montero scored twice and assisted on another goal, and the Seattle Sounders FC looked like a seasoned juggernaut in their inaugural game with a convincing 3-0 win over the New York Red Bulls on Thursday night to begin the 14th season of MLS.

MLS nixes expansion to Ottawa
Daniel Girard

It appears Canada will not get a third Major League Soccer team.
At least not yet.
Just two days after the MLS announced Vancouver was getting a franchise beginning with the 2011 season, league officials have scheduled a news conference in Portland today where it's widely expected the city will be awarded a team.
The website of The Oregonian newspaper yesterday confirmed the deal, citing sources. The team would also begin play in 2011.
Awarding the league's 18th franchise to Portland is a blow to Ottawa, which along with St. Louis was one of four finalists for the two new MLS teams.

The Wizards were one of the hottest teams down the stretch last season, and narrowly fell short on eliminating the eventual champion Columbus Crew in the MLS Cup Playoffs. Toronto FC was much improved in its second season in MLS, and has a place in the postseason firmly in its sights to kick off the year.

Do we know if Seattle has a "travelling team" as far as their supporters go?
It might be nice to meet a few of em at the tailgate before the game on April 4th.

I doubt it. Their actual supporters group doesn't seem that big yet, and it's a hell of a flight from Seattle to Toronto

Whitecaps' admission to MLS buoys Impact

Montreal next? 'We should be there, too,' De Santis says

Nick De Santis welcomed the news about the Vancouver Whitecaps joining Major League Soccer as a big step in the growth of the sport in Canada, but also said the Impact merits an opportunity to take its game to the next tier.
"It's great to see another Canadian market get to the highest level of soccer," the Impact general manager said after Wednesday's announcement that Vancouver will become the second Canadian city in MLS, joining Toronto FC. "It goes to show clubs like Vancouver, Toronto (which joined MLS in 2007) and ourselves belong at the highest level.

Vancouver's MLS ownership group - made up of Greg Kerfoot, Whitecaps owner; National Basketball Association star Steve Nash, who grew up in Victoria; Jeff Mallett, co-owner of Major League Baseball's San Francisco Giants and Steve Luczo, co-owner of the NBA's Boston Celtics - paid $35 million U.S. to join MLS, $5 million less than what the league was asking for a franchise-only fee from Montreal.

Saputo, in partnership with Canadiens owner George Gillett just get :hump: like a :sheep: from Garber and MLS.

"travelling by land for eight hours to Dakar in Senegal. Then there was an airplane to Accra in Ghana. I had to wait there for five days before flying for 15 hours to Germany and then to Toronto."
I assume this was because of visa issues (probably with the US) because there are faster ways to get here...

also, I know that Vancouver will be a rival, but I'll be happy watching them beat US teams just to piss off Bill Archer.

I don't believe there ever was an Ottawa "Deal". :noidea:

Realistically the Ottawa bid had no chance this time around what with no stadium and no buy in from the various levels of Government involved.

That being said Garber played it very well. With other groups dropping out he kept the Ottawa bid in the news as if it were for real this time out.

Makes the other prospective bidders for the next round sit up and take notice, especially Montreal.

2012 or 2013 is a very real possibility if Ottawa can gets its stuff organized regarding stadiums.

Has MLS ever set an upper limit on the prospective size of the league??
20 teams max? or will they just keep expanding as long as the expansion $$ is out there? It's not like the world has a shortage of football players!

Garber said the other day that when they get to 20 they'll stop and take a good hard look at what this means for MLS at that point. So I don't think they'll go 21 and 22 the year after, that's for sure.
People always talk about the FIFA limit on divisions but Garber could come up with some new scheme to make it work beyond 20.

I hope he doesn't go over 20. You've got to realize the talent pool isn't that deep in North America right. Things are going to get watered down if this happens. Also, How many cities are there in North America that can actually sustain the interest for MLS? We already have a couple existing teams that can't support it.

Even with the deep talent pool in the NHL, the league still faces problems with shitty cities that can only just cover costs, with a couple that can't even do that!!!

I really hope the MLS chooses quality over quantity.

Melnyk is hellbent on Kanata. Doubt downtown will happen.

I think April is key (Mark in Ottawa can correct me, he'd be more knowledgeable on the subject than me). I really feel it's all or nothing for the city council meetings, either Melnyk's proposal is agreed upon, or Cunt's Landsdowne live proposal.

I just can't see the two working together to be honest.
