Can Toronto FC make the playoffs?
By John F. Molinaro

Is this the year? After two seasons of futility, can Toronto FC finally break through and reach the playoffs for the first time?
Major League Soccer's 2009 regular season kicks off this week and Toronto will be looking to improve on its 9-13-8 record from a year ago, when it stumbled to last place in the Eastern Conference.

Who will be the kings of the East?
By John F. Molinaro

David Beckham won't be around for the start of Major League Soccer's 2009 regular season, but there's still plenty of reason to be excited about the new campaign.
There are also many pressing questions that need to be answered.
Toronto FC will be looking to qualify for the playoffs for the first time after making a series of big off-season moves, most notably trading for Dwayne De Rosario. The arrival of the Canadian veteran, along with Argentine forward Pablo Vitti, makes Toronto a strong force in the Eastern Conference, but is it enough to turn it into a playoff contender?

Drew Carey full of ideas as owner in MLS
Associated Press

NEW YORK — Visiting the museum at FC Barcelona's stadium a couple years ago, comedian Drew Carey heard the tour guide say something about the fans voting for a new team president.
Once he learned how regular people can join the club and have a say in how it's run, Carey's reaction was one only a wealthy celebrity could have.
"Right away, I thought, 'I would love to own a team back in the States just to bring this idea to the United States,"' the host of "The Price Is Right" recalled Monday. "As soon as I got done with that, I started looking into how much is it to buy a soccer team. They told me, and I thought, 'Oh, I could afford that.'

Good news for the league how the Sounders are catching on:

SEATTLE (AP) - If this happened in London or Stockholm, maybe Freddie Ljungberg wouldn't remember the exchange. It would be just another part of his day as one of the most recognizable soccer players in the world not named "Beckham."

But in America? In Seattle?

"I just went to buy some groceries and people came up to shake hands," Ljungberg recalled.

Simply suggesting there is mere "interest" around these parts for the return of professional soccer is grossly understating the amount of fascination for the Seattle Sounders FC, the newest franchise in Major League Soccer.http://www.komonews.com/sports/41329047.html

Looks like they are having a buzz similar to TFC. Way better than having another KC or Columbus. Are we finally at the "tipping point" where footie becomes a "big" sport in North America?
