TFC is rounding nicely into form
By GARETH WHEELER (gareth.wheeler@suntv.canoe.ca)

After a productive off-season, the 2009 Major League Soccer season gets underway Saturday for Toronto FC as they visit the Kansas City Wizards (9:30 p.m.).
A lot has been said about the off-season improvements to the team, but how much of a difference will they make?
Time for fact or fiction.
With the addition of Adrian Serioux, TFC's defence is strong enough for '09.

Vitti adds an Argentine punch
'We don't speak the same language but are understanding each other on the field'
Daniel Girard

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Pablo Vitti speaks very little English.
But the Argentine striker has no problem understanding his role with Toronto FC.
Signed early in training camp, the 23-year-old Vitti has been brought in to add some offensive punch to a team that scored just 34 goals in 30 games last season, tied for second worst in Major League Soccer.
So far, so good.
In the two games he played in the Carolina Challenge Cup here, Vitti looked comfortable in his new surroundings.

Cracking jokes
Ryan Johnston

If overweight stand-up comics have taught us anything it is that jokes mask insecurity.
John Carver must have felt a similar insecurity on Saturday when Toronto FC fell 2-1 in the final of the Carolina Challenge Cup. (http://www.google.com/hostednews/canadianpress/article/ALeqM5iY4p3PQ0d32YoXTvbho6lAOO4--JA)
"The one thing for sure is that we are going to be in great condition if we keep playing games with 10 men," Carver said; (http://torontofc.neulion.com/tfc/console.jsp?catid=2&id=434) clearly agitated in the wake of the 2-1 Carolina Challenge Cup loss to Real Salt Lake.

Carl Robinson will miss the Columbus game on March 28th - he was named in the Wales squad for the WCQ against Finland on Mar 28th and Germany on April 1st.
Good for him but too bad for us - he will surely be missed.

Game time is 8.30pm EDT (Toronto time), 7.30pm CDT in Kansas City

It appears to be going head-to-head with the NCAA March Madness games in KC, which begin at 6.10 CDT (with the second game at approx 8.30pm CDT). These times aren't officially set yet, but that's what showing on the Sprint Center website.

You'd think the team/league would try to avoid (i) going head-to-head with a pretty special event that may be of interest to quite a few of the ticket holders/TV viewers, and (ii) potentially much colder conditions at night.

I'm guessing that a high percentage of the season ticket holders are families, and they avoid Saturday afternoons because their kids have games. But it sucks for the KC roadtrippers who were hoping to see a good NCAA game.

EDIT: this site says the NCAA games are at 3.30 and 5.50 (2.20 CDT and 4.50 CDT). So who knows?

Glad to see Catheter Kelly doesn't seem to be appearing in the print editions of the Star anymore (I know he still has his own blog). This Daniel Girard guy seems to be the new beat writer for TFC, his reporting is a lot more balanced and accurate.

funny quote from Drew Carey

"I think the expansion team this year actually is the Galaxy and not us," the Seattle Sounders FC co-owner told reporters at MLS headquarters Monday morning.
"I said that to all my Riot Squad friends. You're the ones scrambling to put a team together from scratch, didn't know who was playing for you day-to-day. ... They're coming from a big mess, they're the expansion team."
