Performance-related pay for TFC (http://www.cbc.ca/sports/blogs/2009/03/performancerelated_pay_for_tfc.html)
Nigel Reed

In soccer, as in all professions, there is an agreed rate for the job.
The compensation is based on a number of criteria, including age, experience and skill plus, to an extent, a perceived market value. Generally speaking, an impact player - one who scores or creates goals - will earn more than a defensive midfielder or a full-back.
A striker, for example, is the one who will finish the chances, receive the fans' adulation, grab the media headlines, sell more replica jerseys and collect the biggest cheque because of his value to the organization.

TFC face D.C. United in S.C.
Reds look for second win at Carolina Cup

Toronto FC take on D.C. United in the Carolina Cup at Blackbaud Stadium on Wednesday. Kick off is at 5:00 p.m. live on Toronto FC TV. You can also follow the game through our live match blog (http://toronto.fc.mlsnet.com/t280/fans/blogs/match_day/index.jsp) on TorontoFC.ca. TFC won their opening match of the tournament on Saturday beating hosts Charleston Battery 2-1 with goals from Dwayne De Rosario and Rohan Ricketts. Adrian Serioux is to play against D.C. despite being sent off on Saturday for receiving two yellow cards. Pablo Vitti could miss the match although he has been training with the team. The Argentine striker was kept out of the win over Charleston as a precaution after picking up a slight knock.

Shaping up
Gerry Dobson

It's a small wonder that Toronto FC spend a week in Charleston, SC, while preparing for the new season. The place is gorgeous. Steeped in history, plenty to do, and a wonderful climate.

The Carolina Cup presason tournament is well underway. We watched the double-header the other night and were completely unimpressed with D.C. United as they played Real Salt Lake. Many of the D.C. players looked out of shape. That's certainly not the case with Toronto FC. Its fitness level and workrate is superb. Even though they went a man down against the USL's Charleston Battery, the team still passed the ball around nicely and wore down the opposition.

SSG - totally looks like a particularly annoying stripper at one of the airport clubs.

Good morning,

I'd like to see the SSG naked.

Nigel is right about Vitti in the sense that he probably shouldn't be the 4th or 5th highest paid player on the team but you have to give him a reason to come here. At the end of the day it is a job and if you have to relocate it has to be worth it.

Central defence still appears to be a question mark. New signing Adrian Serioux is still a step behind as he works to get his fitness level up. Nobody seems worried however as more personnel moves appear imminent.

Sounds like our CB will be coming in!!!

re Vitti's pay, I'll bet anyone a pint that he's only personally getting a fraction of that $300K. South American players have near-feudal relationships with player agent/brokers. Plus there's the loan fee to Independiente, which I think is in there.

from goff about DC lineup changes:

*D.C. United will play its second match at the Carolina Challenge Cup in Charleston, S.C., at 5 p.m. today against Toronto. Santino Quaranta, Fred, Bryan Namoff and Louis Crayton are out. Newly acquired goalkeeper Josh Wicks is expected to arrive soon but it's unclear whether he'll play tonight or not until Saturday's finale against the Battery. The red card recipients, Dejan Jakovic and Anthony Peters, are eligible to play. (It's a preseason exhibition tournament, after all.)

I am going to kill my company for paying for a post grade evening course that happens to lie on Wednesdays. Needless to say I will be live streaming the first half and then getting Blackberry updates.

Sounds more like Dobson is continuing to write those tease-lines without any proof/back-up just to get people coming back to his blog. Still though, I guess it's better than nothing and I do hope he's right, but he's been wrong so many times...
