Canada unveils plans for soccer's Gold Cup
Friendly planned for May 30 in Cyprus

NEIL DAVIDSON

Teams at this summer's Gold Cup may want to pack light. The men's soccer tournament is being played in a record 13 U.S. venues, meaning squads will be on the move for every game.
Unfortunately Canada will be doing little travelling to prepare for the 12-country tournament July 3-26. Coach Dale Mitchell confirmed Monday that Canada's warmup for the CONCACAF championship will be a May 30 game in Cyprus followed by a training camp.
FIFA has two international match dates for friendlies March 28-April 1 but Canada is not taking advantage.
"I would prefer to be playing on every international date, but it's not possible this year," Mitchell said Monday from Trinidad and Tobago where he is taking in the CONCACAF under-20 qualifying tournament.

Canada U-20s slam Mexico 2-0
By SUN WIRE SERVICES

Randy Edwini-Bonsu scored twice in eight minutes late in the game to give Canada a 2-0 win over Mexico at the CONCACAF under-20 soccer tournament in Trinidad yesterday.
The 75th- and 83rd-minute goals gave Canada (1-1-0) a lifeline in the eight-country event after an opening 1-0 loss to Trinidad and Tobago.
Canada wraps up round-robin play tomorrow against Costa Rica.

Big-bucks Beckham still top salary earner in MLS

NEW YORK–David Beckham tops Major League Soccer's salary list again at $6.5 million (all figures U.S.) – more than 43 times the league's average – even though he'll remain on loan from the Los Angeles Galaxy to AC Milan until mid-season.

Canadian international Dwayne De Rosario ranks 13th in the league, topping the Toronto FC payroll at $357,000.
Forty players make the minimum $34,000 and 12 more make the developmental minimum of $20,100.

We play May 30, at Houston.

That's a big game for DeRo. I can't imagine him giving it up for a Cyprus friendly.

Crew's Moffat, Noonan likely to miss start of season with injuries

Monday, March 9, 2009 2:58 PM
By Shawn Mitchell (smitchell@dispatch.com)

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
http://www.dispatch.com/wwwexportcontent/sites/dispatch/sports/stories/2009/03/09/moffat200.jpg Dispatch
The Columbus Crew's Adam Moffat tries to steal the ball from Kansas City's Roger Espinoza during a game at Crew Stadium last May.

Midfielder Adam Moffat is likely to miss the Crew's first two games because of a lingering injury to his left knee.
Moffat, a starter in the central midfield before suffering the season-ending ligament tear to the knee on May 31, was originally projected to be ready for the start of the season.
The Scotsman scored two goals in six starts and was developing a burgeoning reputation as a midfield agitator before undergoing surgery on June 10. He was expected to reclaim his starting spot from Brad Evans, who was selected by the Seattle Sounders in the expansion draft and is the only starter who will not return to the MLS Cup champion Crew.
Moffat has not played in any of the Crew's seven preseason games and experienced inflammation and tendonitis that kept him off the practice field during the latter portion of the Crew's preseason trip to England last week.
"I still think he'll be fully fit by the beginning of the season but he won't have played any minutes in any games and that's going to make it tough for him," Crew trainer Jason Mathews said.
"If he can get an early reserve game or get two or three straight weeks of training then by that third or fourth game I don't think there will be any issues."
Moffat said he is hopeful that he can play in a reserve game tentatively scheduled for the weekend of Toronto's visit to Crew Stadium on March 28.
"That might be the first time I play," Moffat said. "I know I won't be playing this week in Texas."
Moffat will travel with the Crew to Austin, Texas, on Tuesday. The Crew will practice there and play two exhibition games against minor-league teams before opening the season at the Houston Dynamo March 21.
Forward Pat Noonan will likely miss the Houston game and could be out substantially longer. Noonan injured his back while moving personal items at home and suffered a herniated disc.
"We'll see what his response is," Mathews said. "It could be two weeks. It could be two months."
Coach Robert Warzycha said Noonan will not travel to Austin with the team.

From the CP24 Article...
"MLS salaries have come under scrutiny for the wide range between a team's highest-paid player and the least-paid. For example, a report says Blanco earns 146 times that of Chicago's Peter Lowry, who earns only $20,100."

This is the most ignorant thing I have read in a while... "MLS Salaries have come under scrutiny for the wide range..." etc etc etc. So when 'Joe Smith' gets called up from the NYR AHL farm team, and he was playing alongside Jagr at $10-million a season, and he's making $40k its not a problem, but if its the MLS it is a problem... $20,100 is the "DEVELOPMENT SALARY MINIMUM" aka just like a hockey player playing in the minors (prior to the rookie minimum salary being introduced)...

I know it may not be an exact comparison, but its just another useless jab by the media at the MLS, because they don't know how things work...

For the record, my good friend played for NYR's farm team, he made about 40k, and when the guys got called up, they would make their pro-salary for one day! They didn't get the league minimum $345k handed to them, they got a one-time cheque of $965 bucks for the one day they spent in the pros...

As for Beckham, leave completely already. You didn't dominate here, your ego is hurt and your value has dropped - leave already...

Carts....

Toronto has 4 players in the top 25 of salaries (DC united has the most at 5), 7 in the top 50 (DC has the most at 7), 8 in the top 100 (Houston & Columbus have 9)

All in all, for the number of players in the top 25, 50, 150, 200 and 300 of salaries, we are higher then average

OK it's goal.com, but this says that Beckham maybe isn't coming back at all.

http://www.goal.com/en/news/10/italy/2009/03/10/1147932/david-beckham-to-scrap-galaxy-return-report

I believe the story. AC Milan have been playing exhibitions all over the place and raking it in. Now they start a media blitz to keep him for the pre-season.

So can someone confirm that with Mitchell still coach of Canada (for whatever reason), DeRo, Serioux, and Brennan will not miss any of Toronto's matches this summer?

It was a problem. Did you miss the lockout and ensuing salary cap? ;)

I was under the impression though that a player, when called up, automatically gets his salary raised to that of at least the NHL minimum for as long as he's with the NHL club. Guess not.

Dobson: Shaping up
http://www.sportsnet.ca/soccer/blogs/2009/03/10/dobson_charleston_tfc/

Some interesting tidbits

-Central defence still appears to be a question mark. New signing Adrian Serioux is still a step behind as he works to get his fitness level up. Nobody seems worried however as more personnel moves appear imminent.

-Striker O'Brian White is ahead of schedule as he continues to recover from knee surgery.

-Greg Sutton is still feeling pain with that dislocated finger but he's training on a regular basis.

We didn't get a February friendly and now we're not getting a March one either.

Just peachy. How the hell is a team supposed to improve if it never plays together?
