So, without the 2 Gambians we have approx. $276,650 left.

I'm sure this has been covered before, but what's the difference between base and guaranteed?

Base is the number that counts against the cap. Guaranteed is the amount they're contractually guaranteed to earn when you add in various incentives and bonuses (i.e. allocation top ups, allowances etc.).

jloome
03-06-2009, 09:33 PM
Wow, they have a lot of faith in Cronin and Frei. Not so much in White, although they're paying him a lot of guaranteed year-one cash but with a base that could save them face is he bites chunks at this level.

How much was robbo last year? I think he's actually making the same, isn't he? Ricketts seems to be down a bit. Edwards' is surprisingly high for guaranteed income, given how much harder that would make him to trade. Given his US callup last year, I assume that's because there's some overhype at play.

Danny D's taking one for the team, big time. Fucking legend, that guy. If he has to buy a meal again in TO in the future it'll be a crime.

Looks like Johann's in tough to stick around, based on that deal.

So using the base, we are $310K over the cap. But using allocation and the guaranteed amounts.......we have about $275K to use (not including the Gambians)

Other way around. Using the base, we have $275k to go around. Using the guaranteed, we'd be $310K over.

I don't disagree, but the reality in this league is that third goalies usually make league min, $34,000.

In all, I'd have to say we have a very healthy salary structure, well balanced. I think DD will prove underpaid if he stays healthy this season, as his strike rate is second-to-none; he's just fragile due to age. But compared to other teams (Ives and Steve Goff have broken down the Red Bulls and DC United respectively on their blogs) there's far more balance from top to bottom, a more gradual curve in salary discrepancies.

How else do you plan to keep prospects around? That's life. You think he's overpaid, but yet Mo Edu was making that much at an older age and we sold him for $5Mil. It's not overpaying, it's making an investment.

Dichio is making enough. He's still a team leader but he's also 34, injury prone and our 3rd striker. I'm glad he's still making more than 100k, but at the same time glad he took a pay cut from the $155 or so last year.

Not sure if that's possible with the league and the CBA though.

A question, perhaps silly, but one that nonetheless needs to be asked.
How can anyone making, say, 50K or less, live in a place like Toronto?
Is there anything (else) behind those low salaries? For example, free accomodation? If affirmative, then another question arises. What, if anything, lies behind those higher salaries? Reference has been made, for example, to Ricketts possible having extra $ from MLSE for his "marketing" work.

I'd be very surprised if MLSE could pay him anything outside of his TFC salary... much to easy to get around the cap otherwise...

People live in downtown toronto making $50k all over the place. When you play on a professional team you get tons of stuff paid for while you are 'on the job', it's not great but many people have hard jobs, commute and even have families on 50k in downtown toronto. I don't think that's a bad amount for a young player on a professional sports team, given the general MLS structure.

you can rent a condo (1 bed, 1 bath) right down from BMO there for $1300-1600 a month (look on MLS.ca, there are tonnes now for that range a short bike ride from BMO). with TV and other utilities that's 2000 or less per month, x 10 months. None of these guys owns a car... they just bike it down to the stadium. if yer making around 50K or more US you are fine.

given that they get money for being on the road (beyond their set pay), plus some meals are taken care of at BMO I believe, Edwards and the rest are doing fine I would think. The only guys who would be on the edge would be the dev players or the guys making the minimum. But Nana, for example, is also getting money from the Canadian government.

but i'd definitely like to know the tax implications on the players... cuz TFC doesn't pay them, so they aren't earning anything from a canadian company... how would that work?

well if his contract is not guaranteed from the start of the 2009 season he can be released in July without any obligation for further payment. but i seriously doubt Mojo would ever do that....

trading is probably not an option since he makes so much and he's an INT for every other team. Edwards would be easier to trade -- a fraction of the cost and he counts as American.
