Soccer is taking over the nation :canada:
By GARETH WHEELER (gareth.wheeler@suntv.canoe.ca)

Hey puckheads -- Montreal Impact midfielder Sandro Grande has a message for you:
"This (Canada) is not a hockey nation. This is a soccer nation."
What?
Questioning hockey's status as the undisputed No. 1 in Canada is sacrilegious. Hockey always has been top dog.
Sure, Grande was coming off a high, after beating Mexico's Santos Laguna in the first leg of their CONCACAF Champions League in front of over 55,000 jacked up fans at the Big 'O' in Montreal.
But there's truth to it -- Canada is a soccer nation, and maybe how important we're told hockey is to Canadian culture isn't reality.

MLS: Expansion Benchmarks Are High

MLS's remarkable run of success with its expansion teams will be put to a test when two new teams join.
In mid-March, two more teams are expected to come aboard. Vancouver and Miami head the list, Portland is a possibility, and St. Louis and Ottawa are still in the hunt.
Whichever of those five are chosen will have high benchmarks to attain, particularly with 2009 debutant Seattle projecting average attendances of 25,000 per game.

The Canadian Press has learned Ontario's Ministry of the Attorney General is looking into the sale and pricing of tickets for entertainment and sporting events in the province.
Attorney General Chris Bentley "is exploring options right now to address mounting concerns about access to tickets and the cost of tickets," a source close to the minister said Sunday.
It's not known whether those options would include legislation or a formal investigation into the sale and resale of tickets.
Bentley is expected to have more to say on the matter when he meets with reporters following Monday's question period at the Ontario legislature.

from Goff..doesn't really affect TFC i guess since they are below these numbers...but still, some moves may get made...

*The MLS roster compliance deadline is today. Teams must be under the salary cap and have no more than 20 senior players and four developmental players under contract. Some teams will not have to make any moves. Trials and signings will continue throughout preseason and roster changes are allowed until late in the season.

Essentially - Yes

The Argos have a long history with the name, and it's copywritten, so the use of Toronto FC was a compromise to get a legit sounding Football name without risking embarassing legal action.

They obviously know the value of using FC to mean Football Club. Maybe they should have gone with Futebal or some non engilsh varient, but they didn't.
They couldn't use Toronto Football Club for legal reasons. It has nothing to do with TFC being a more legit "Football" team than the Argos. It's simply that the Argos have been using the name since 1873. It's theirs to use, and protect.

JDG does make an accurate point...
The fact is, "FC" is not an acronym for anything when it comes to the copyrighted name of our team.
But, it was obviously chosen because worldwide "FC" stands for "football club".
So, does it stand for "football club"? ... of course it does.
But is "football club" part of Toronto's copyrighted name? ... no.

After Toronto's expansion was announced in 2005,[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toronto_fc#cite_note-0) the name of the club was officially announced on May 11 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/May_11), 2006 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2006) by the team's owner, Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment Ltd. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maple_Leaf_Sports_%26_Entertainment_Ltd.) (MLSE).[2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toronto_fc#cite_note-1)The "FC" in the team's name is the conventional initialism for Football Club (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Football_Club), but in official media and documents the team has only been referred to as Toronto FC. Larry Tannenbaum, chairman of MLSE, stated at the team name's unveiling that "I think the way we spell it is 'futbol'."[3] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toronto_fc#cite_note-2)

Problem Solved.

this has always been an argument that boggles me. pretty much everyone i know outside of supporters groups refers the the team as FC. And they're right.

Language is a sounds that serves as a reference to something. when someone says FC in toronto, they aren't talking about the Argos because no one, and i mean no one, in toronto uses that sound as a reference to the argos. after that, it's all irrelevant.

BRANDEN- With TFC picking up in midfield (De Ro) and striker (Vitti) but actually weakening in what was an atrocious defence last year(losing Marshall and James), do you see them going with three at the back, and possibly playing two holding midfielders (in Robbo and Cronin)?
IVES- Picking up Adrian Serioux gives TFC an upgrade over Marshall and I’m hearing that Toronto is closing in on a big center back. As for Toronto using a three-man defense, John Carver doesn’t strike me as someone who will imply a three-man defense that much. I think we will see our share of 4-4-2 and 4-2-3-1 from Toronto this year.

Seems all the fieldturf you see in MLS is the same grade.

From a Sounders Blog:

There are so many statements about the XBox 360 Pitch at Qwest Field around the net that are blatantly untrue I figured it is time to start compiling them.

Statement: All artificial surfaces in MLS are the same.
Verdict: True
All current non-grass surfaces in MLS currently use some generation of Field Turf. In the past some of the artificial surfaces were other generation of bladed surfaces, and even AstroTurf.

http://sounderatheart.com/2008/11/qwest-fields-turf/

I imagine age and use beats it down, so by this time of year ours is probably pretty trampled. I remember last season Carver said that they can roll it up, put it back and groom it some and that helps soften it up.

Qwest field has brand spanking new fieldturf, but other than that Sigi's just blowing smoke up everyones ass and hyping his team.

I say this because there's no way in hell the man could ever even get a good look at any turf anywhere with that gut of his.

TORONTO FC SIGNS PAIR OF GAMBIAN INTERNATIONALS

Toronto FC announced Tuesday that they have signed defenders Emmanuel Gomez and Amadou Sanyang to MLS contracts. Gomez was acquired from Samger Football Club of the Gambian National 1st Division, while Sanyang arrives from Real de Banjul Football Club in Gambia. As per league and team policy, financial details were not announced.
“Both these players are great young talents and have a huge future ahead of them,” said manager, director of soccer Mo Johnston. “Gomez is very good in the air, has very good speed and is an outstanding young centre back. Amadou has great ability as well; he’s very talented and will be a great asset for many years to come. We are delighted to have them both on board.”
Gomez, 18, has been a fixture in both his club side and a regular member of the Gambian U-20 National Team. He was a member of the squad that competed in qualification for the 2009 African Championship, and has most recently been selected to train with the Senior team.
Sanyang, 17, was a member of the Gambian U-17 squad, and is currently part of the U-20 squad. In 2007, he was honoured as the Best Midfielder in the National League and was part of the winning team that captured the Four Nation Tournament held in Ivory Coast that year. In that tournament he was named MVP runner-up.
Due to his age, Sanyang will not be able to become a full member of the Toronto FC Senior squad until his 18th birthday. Until that time the defender will train with both the senior team and TFC Academy and be able to play matches for the Academy. Sanyang turns 18 August 1, the same day that Toronto FC faces the New England Revolution at Gillette Stadium. If selected, he could make his debut with the first team on that date.
Sanyang has arrived in Toronto and is training with the team having finalized the immigration process. Gomez will arrive in Canada following the completion of all international transfer and immigration procedures.
