1) Where is the rumored CB signing from?

2) Does TFC have leverage with the league to get other Canadian teams into MLS?

3) Would they use it now that they own GolTV?

4) What time frame are TFC planning on putting in grass?

5) What happened with Michael McGlinchey?

Yes I'd like to expand. No filling in the corners isn't likely, nor is a roof. And the north patio is a nice feature. There isn't enough room there to do anything substantial. Has to do with fire Marshall and traffic flow and emergency planning. And it's a nice place for a pint.

What are the viable Options for expansion then? extending the south end up to match the size of the east end stands?

So then any expansion would most likely be wrapping the 2nd tier around the south end, with a possible second tier on the east side as well?

Would that basically limit expansion to around 30k or so? Or even less than that, maybe?

And, just curious, why no filling in the corners? Seems to be a pretty standard thing in most stadiums, including all the new MLS ones.

Yes I'd like to expand. No filling in the corners isn't likely, nor is a roof. And the north patio is a nice feature. There isn't enough room there to do anything substantial. Has to do with fire Marshall and traffic flow and emergency planning. And it's a nice place for a pint.

yep ... personally I love the beer garden :hide:

I realize that mlsintoronto isn't still in Dorval answering questions but I posed this question on the V's board and so I thought I'd pose it hear for the group to discuss.

In terms of promoting players from the academy I know there's a lot of restrictions including signing them to a GA contract (1 every 3 years), 2 to a dev roster spot every year (only if they're 20) and discovery claim (have to sign them to a senior contract).

Is there anything preventing a team from using a draft pick to acquire an academy player from their own academy or from any other teams academy?

The system is still screwed up but am curious if this is an option that can be exploited.

I assume that if they could, they'd have to list their eligibility for the draft which would in turn mean we could lose them to another team...

Also, in some CFL stadiums, when they host the Grey Cup or other big game, they have temporary seating added... If BMO was to host a MLS Cup game or a CONCACAF semifinal or better, what are chances there would be temporary stands put in the beer garden

too true but in a spring training session you don't measure yourself against the lower level clubs. Paul, this is just an idea, but would it be a terrible one to find a sponsor who was willing to put a roof on the south end if they were to name it, too? We see that around the world. It could be the Carlsberg end, or BMO stand or whatever.

The cost is very low. Find the cheapest solution and you would be surprised at just how low the cost will be to put a roof on top of the loudest supporters. Result: atmosphere would be 5 times greater at BMO. Surely this is worth looking into. At the very least you can pocket more cash for TFC sponsoring the stand. The supporters would actually support this idea - unlike the Kia thunder sticks ;)

Thanks!

Are we ever going to see TFC operate a reserve squad like the Impact have done with the Attak or a professional team within our Academy system like the Whitecaps do with their PDL team? Would either scenario even be permissible under MLS rules?

devioustrevor
02-28-2009, 02:28 AM
I don't think so. A reserve team would still be TFC players and MLS limits the number of players you can have under contract. So unless MLS relaxed the rules a little and allowed TFC to use a combination of under-utilized players and Academy players at the same time.

Perhaps the best bet would be to have TFC (or MLSE) start an USL or CSL club and have reserve quality players and when the need dictated 'loan' the players to MLS to go to TFC.

As I understand it, they'd still have to go through the allocation process in order to sign them even on a loan basis.

What will happen to Montreal’s players on the Attak and the Whitecaps players on their PDL squad if either organization makes the jump to the MLS? I very seriously doubt the Whitecaps are gong to restructure their extensive player development program just to get in line with the rest of the MLS.

The MLS academy setup is so limited and will never be productive in developing players unless there is a professional element to it.

Are we ever going to see TFC operate a reserve squad like the Impact have done with the Attak or a professional team within our Academy system like the Whitecaps do with their PDL team? Would either scenario even be permissible under MLS rules?

our U18s play in the CSL - the same league as the Attak, so yes - its happening now.

Paul, is there any plans to make TFC gift cards usable at BMO and online?

Driving from KW to Centre Sports is a bitch in the offseason.

Who is currently running the TFC website?? It looks like an MLS template? Why not funk it up like the Sounders have done??

Why is that embarrassing? That's 1 player per year of our existence...Vancouver WISHES they had those kinds of numbers.

Never thought of it that way, we're lucky:D

Thanks for answering my question. I meant will TFC have professional reserve or academy squad - along the lines of what the Impact and Whitecaps are doing. I was aware that the top academy team plays in the CSL.

dont think the academy can be professional... it might screw up a kid's chances at an NCAA scholarship if he doesn't make it to TFC.

i guess a professional reserve squad could work, but it wouldn't be in the CSL unless they remove the academy from it... One thing I've noticed with the Attak is they don't really have a lot of kids playing; it's more mature players still hanging on, with a few kids mixed in. TFC could basically get the academy out of the CSL, and put a sort of pro reserve squad in it... then find another place for the academy to play. Not sure where that academy would go though right now.

Could they play in the OSL?

i guess they could.. but would the competition be as strong? right now the boys compete against men mostly, which is probably a good thing for them to test their abilities. i see the current situation as a sort of compromise. The kids are not necessarily ready, but they get to play mature players. If they go to the OSL, competition wouldn't be as good, and they might dominate. If they had a "pro" CSL team of older players, maybe the competition wouldn't be as good for them either -- cuz they'd all be guys who have been in MLS or who are higher level talents. They need to be tested more too.

What MLS really need to do with the next CBA is this: 1) raise DEV pay to what the low-end senior roster pay is now. 2) put DEV rosters to 11 spots. 3) reinstate the reserve league and have more than 12 games or whatever it was before. Then the academy has its place in the CSL, and the reserve league does what the CSL does for the Attak. This would also be good for the parity initiatives the league likes, cuz teams which have more money wouldn't be at the advantage in terms of starting up feeder clubs.

^^ It would be cool if the reserve division you are depicting also included reserve teams from willing USL teams (unlikely but maybe) and then maybe split into two divisions (east and west) and you only play teams in your division to reduce travel costs. I think travel costs was one of the major reasons that the reserve division was eliminated to begin with. I don't think the east and west reserve leagues have to be all that big and it wouldn't matter if they play the same team a couple times because its all about development.

Unless you have a professional bridge between the academy and the first team all TFC academy will do is produce players for NCAA teams - which I think is the secret motivation of the MLS academy set up.

You're correct on this... the OSL level is not high enough throughout the league. There are definitely some good players in the OSL, but this would not provide the test development players need.

A good point that a lot of people recognize was brought up by JDG in the other thread...

Not many people predicted how well TFC has been supported.

If it had to be done all over again, what would you do differently?

and "nothing" is not an answer, there is always room for improvement :p

Best bet IMO is to field a reserve team in the CSL and put the Academy in PDL so that their eligibilty does not get hindered. The Whitecaps have their residency in the PDL as well.

From there you could promote Acedmy players to the Reserve squad if they want to try going pro (or happen to be going to school at a CIS team like a number of our acaedmy players did this year anyways.)

Ok Paul I know this post is dying but the TFC FANS need your help.

AS i am sure you know by now, the CHARLSTON TOURNAMENT will no longer have a webstream.

Is there nothing that TFC could do for us fans who can not make it down to SOUTH CAROLINA?

Please help us. Toronto FC has huge support and the fans need to be able to watch this.

Thanks

We've been working on this for days. It was going to happen bit a critical piece of expensive equipment was received damaged today at charleston. Unfortunately we can't find another and had to make the call today. We and the people at charleston battery, as well as USL and CBC have all been working on this but we couldn't pull it off. We're not happy about it either.

The first season the Battery streamed the games with one camera and no audio, any chance they can do that again?

The second season, they streamed the games with one camera and poor audio.

My guess is that expensive piece of equipment is the one that does the magic from pictures into internet bits.
